Frequently Asked Questions

Will You Mark our Private Utilities?

811 will come and mark all Public Utilities for free, and at times the Gas line if the meter is in the affected area. However, 811 is not required to mark Private Utilities, though one locator may mark more than another, and each county has variations on their marking guidelines.

If you wish to ensure that your Private Utilities are marked, you can hire an Independent Locator. Anchor Stump Removal cannot be held responsible for any unmarked Private Utilities as it is impossible to know where they, and any other unmarked items, may exist.

What Are some examples of Private Utilities?

Buried Items that 811 considers Private and may not mark include: Irrigation, Yard Lighting, Gutter Drains, French Drainage Systems, Invisible Dog Fencing, Buried Propane Tanks, Fountain & Pool Lines, Septic Systems, & various Supply Lines to Garages, Barns, Sheds, etc.

Though 811 may not mark these Private Utilities, at Anchor, we strive to be as aware and precise with our grinding as possible and in our 5+ years of Stump Grinding in Knox County and surrounding areas, we have yet to hit anything more than an ancient phone line.

wHAT SAFETY PRECAUTIONS DO YOU TAKE?

Our Machine is one of the latest in the industry, fully remote controlled, and allows for operation at a safe distance. This allows us to walk around and view every angle for potential dangers as we work and ensure the job is done right the first time.

The work area is also enclosed within our Safety Shields, containing debris and preventing stray projectiles from hitting your cars, windows, or curious bystanders and children. Safety Cones are also used to alert and redirect affected traffic.

How Much & how Deep will you grind?

Generally, we grind 6-8″ below grade level to allow for future grass roots, however we will grind deeper or shallower per the customers request. We also extend out from the base of the stump and grind what’s known as the “hump” or “mound.”

This “Mound” is the tree’s underground root system that is pushing the dirt up a bit. It is often marked with exposed surface roots that snake outward from the stump, so we grind the stump, mound, and surface roots all at an average depth of 6-8″ inches.

How do you HANDLE THE mULCH?

It is important to understand that Stump Grinding loosens tightly compacted dirt and creates fresh mulch in the process. We do not remove this mixture. Instead, the dirt & mulch is moved back into place with the plow on our machine and then very beautifully raked.

This mixture will settle back in place in time, or you can remove the mixture, using the mulch to fill your flowerbeds, pack your other trees, or simply discard it and fill with new topsoil. This fresh mulch can be valuable and used in a variety of ways around your property.
